Business districts
Richmond runs on law, finance, government and corporate headquarters rather than venture-backed software. Greater Richmond placed 12 companies on the 2026 Fortune 1000 and six in the Fortune 500: Performance Food Group at No. 80 on $59.9 billion in revenue, CarMax at No. 162 on $28.2 billion, Altria Group at No. 221 on $20.1 billion, Markel Group at No. 270 on $16.6 billion, Dominion Energy at No. 272 on $16.5 billion, and Accendra Health, formerly Owens & Minor, at No. 407 on $10.7 billion (Greater Richmond Partnership, 11 June 2026). Richmond is also one of about a dozen US cities with both a federal court of appeals and a Federal Reserve Bank: the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, established in 1914, covers the Fifth District of Washington DC, Maryland, the Carolinas, Virginia and most of West Virginia from 701 East Byrd Street, with branches in Baltimore and Charlotte. As the state capital it also hosts the Virginia General Assembly and the Virginia Information Technologies Agency, which buys technology for the executive branch. CoStar Group runs its research and data analytics operations from the city, and pharmaceutical process development is the newest cluster, built on VCU's engineering and life sciences base and a federally funded Richmond and Petersburg manufacturing corridor.
Richmond buying committees look like headquarters committees, not startup teams. Insurance, banking, utility and tobacco headquarters bring procurement, legal, risk and internal audit into the deal early, and the city's concentration of large law firms means contract review is thorough rather than fast. State government is a separate motion: under the Code of Virginia, information technology is procured by the Virginia Information Technologies Agency for itself or on behalf of executive branch agencies, VITA maintains roughly 200 statewide IT contracts that are mandatory for those agencies, orders are placed through the eVA electronic purchasing system, and any cloud services buy or purchase over $250,000 needs a V code in eVA so VITA can review it, so a statewide contract vehicle matters more than a good pitch. Two local quirks shape marketing work: a strong agency and brand scene around The Martin Agency and the VCU Brandcenter means creative claims get judged by people who do this for a living, and the heaviest search demand the site already ranks for is explicitly AEO and SEO service queries rather than generic marketing terms, so the page should answer those questions directly.
Partner ecosystem
Everforth, the technology and digital engineering group that renamed itself from ASGN in April 2026 and trades as EFOR, is headquartered at 4400 Cox Road in Glen Allen after relocating from Calabasas, California, around 2020, and runs six brands: Everforth Apex (Apex Systems), Creative Circle, CyberCoders, ECS, GlideFast and TopBloc. That makes the Richmond region the parent location of large ServiceNow and Workday implementation practices as well as a federal IT services business. Activation Capital, the state authority formally named the Virginia Biotechnology Research Partnership Authority, operates the 34-acre Virginia Bio+Tech Park next to the VCU Medical Center, home to more than 70 companies, research institutes and state and federal laboratories. The legal market is anchored by McGuireWoods at Gateway Plaza, Hunton Andrews Kurth at Riverfront Plaza and Williams Mullen, all headquartered downtown. Richmond has been an advertising centre since the 1960s, with The Martin Agency in Shockoe Slip, Arts and Letters and Padilla, fed by VCU's Brandcenter graduate program, founded in 1995.

Privacy and outreach
The Virginia Consumer Data Protection Act (in force since January 1, 2023) covers residents acting only in an individual or household context and expressly excludes people acting in a commercial or employment context, so business contact data sits largely outside it.
