Chennai is India's third largest software exporter after Bengaluru and Hyderabad and is known as the SaaS capital of India: Zoho and Kissflow are headquartered in the city, Freshworks and Chargebee were founded there, and Ramco Systems is a Chennai product company. It is also India's automotive and electronics manufacturing centre, nicknamed the Detroit of Asia, and Wikipedia, Economy of Chennai, puts it at roughly 30 percent of India's auto industry and 35 percent of its auto components industry, with Chennai metro nominal GDP of Rs 851,246 crore (US$103.06 billion) in 2023-24, about 31.66 percent of Tamil Nadu's economy. The manufacturing belt sits just outside the city in Kancheepuram district, which DT Next reported on 8 July 2026, citing Commerce Ministry data, was India's second largest merchandise exporting district in FY26 at US$26.4 billion. Banking and financial services operations are the third pillar: Wikipedia, Economy of Chennai, calls the city India's second largest hub for banks and financial institutions after Mumbai.

Global capability centres now drive the Chennai market. Cushman & Wakefield's Chennai MarketBeat for Q3 2026, dated 24 September 2026, puts GCCs at 57 percent of gross leasing, a record high, on 1.99 million sq ft of gross leasing with vacancy at 12.08 percent. CBRE's November 2024 report counted about 250 GCC units in the city employing more than 150,000 professionals, roughly 11 percent of India's GCC talent pool, projected 450 to 460 units by 2030, and found US firms accounted for 67 percent of GCC setups from January 2022 to September 2024. In September 2026 the state put forward a three corridor plan, covering the Pallavaram-Thoraipakkam Radial Road, Mount-Poonamallee High Road and Rajiv Gandhi Salai, with shared infrastructure and enhanced floor space index for eligible GCC campuses. For national context, the Zinnov and Nasscom GCC Landscape 2026 report, with data as of March 2026, counted 2,117 GCCs across 3,728 units in India, US$98.4 billion of revenue and 2.36 million people. Practically: GCC buyers here usually hold engineering and delivery ownership but route commercial approval to a global parent, so multithread across India leadership and the global function owner. The founder led SaaS cluster buys faster and is reachable through the AIBoomi and SaaSBoomi community. Manufacturing buyers in the Sriperumbudur, Irungattukottai and Oragadam belt are plant and engineering led with OEM parent approval and long qualification cycles. Not every GCC is expanding, and at least one large US bank has announced it is winding down its Chennai centre and moving staff to Bengaluru or Hyderabad, so confirm a target account's Chennai commitment before building a plan around it.

Partner ecosystem

Chennai has a deep services and GCC bench to partner with or sell through. Cognizant was founded in the city and by 2024 Chennai and Hyderabad each held more than 50,000 of its employees, its two largest bases. Infosys runs its largest development centre in the Mahindra World City SEZ. Accenture, Capgemini, DXC Technology, SAP, Oracle, Cisco, HCLTech, IBM, TCS, Wipro, Tech Mahindra, Microsoft, Deloitte, KPMG and PayPal all operate development or delivery centres in the city. Salesforce's Chennai office is at RMZ Millenia Business Park II in Perungudi, on the OMR corridor. On the buyer side of the same ecosystem, the World Bank Group's Chennai shared services centre is its largest office outside Washington headquarters, with over 1,200 staff providing accounting, finance, HR and IT services to more than 130 offices worldwide (World Bank Group, 13 December 2021), and Standard Chartered's GBS India, operating from Chennai and Bengaluru since 2000, employs over 27,000 people and holds more than 43 percent of the bank's global technology workforce. Databricks lists no Chennai office.
