Tamil Nadu has the second largest state economy in India and is the most industrialised state. Its clusters are distinct and geographic: Chennai and the surrounding Kancheepuram and Chengalpattu belt carry automotive, auto components, electronics manufacturing services, software and defence; Coimbatore is the engineering, pumps, motors and textile machinery hub with a large software base; Tiruppur, Erode, Namakkal, Karur and Dindigul are textiles and garments; Hosur and the rest of Krishnagiri district are auto components and electric vehicles; Ranipet, Ambur and Vaniyambadi are leather and tanning; Tiruchirappalli, Salem and Avadi carry heavy engineering and defence manufacturing. DT Next reported on 8 July 2026, citing Commerce Ministry data, that Tamil Nadu was the fastest growing exporting state in FY26 with merchandise exports of US$59.3 billion, up 13.7 percent, and that Kancheepuram was India's second largest merchandise exporting district at US$26.4 billion.

Automotive and electronics buying is plant and engineering led, with technical evaluation and pilots first and commercial sign off often routed to a global parent. State government estimates reported by India Briefing on 12 October 2026 put Tamil Nadu at roughly 36 percent of India's two wheeler production, about 25 percent of four wheeler production, about 35 percent of auto component production and about 40 percent of tyre production, so component and tier one suppliers are as large a buying population as the OEMs. The Union Government's reply to Parliament, summarised on 24 July 2026, credited Tamil Nadu with 41.63 percent of India's electronics exports and 33.38 percent of motor vehicle exports in 2025-26, which makes the electronics manufacturing services belt around Sriperumbudur and Oragadam a serious target. Public sector and defence buyers (BHEL at Tiruchirappalli and Ranipet, Integral Coach Factory, the Avadi defence cluster) procure through tenders with long qualification cycles, and the Tamil Nadu Defence Industrial Corridor runs through five nodes: Chennai, Coimbatore, Hosur, Salem and Tiruchirappalli. Textile and engineering firms in Coimbatore and Tiruppur are promoter led and decide quickly off a short list; Tiruppur's garment exports were Rs 42,544.40 crore, about US$4.46 billion, in 2025-26, down 4.91 percent year over year per Apparel Resources on 6 June 2026, so cost pressure is live in that cluster. Tamil Nadu's IT sector contributed US$28 billion to India's software and services exports in FY2024 and supplies over 20 percent of India's IT workforce, and state tech employment passed one million in the quarter ended June 2022.

Partner ecosystem

The state carries both India headquarters and delivery scale. Zoho is headquartered in Chennai, with its research and development campus at Estancia IT Park and an office in Tenkasi. Cognizant was founded in Chennai and, by 2024, Chennai and Hyderabad each held more than 50,000 of its employees, its two largest bases. Infosys runs its largest development centre in the Mahindra World City SEZ near Chengalpattu. Salesforce's Tamil Nadu office is at RMZ Millenia Business Park II in Perungudi, Chennai. Tier two capacity is being built out through state owned TIDEL Parks, now operating in Coimbatore and at Pattabiram in Chennai, with a neo park at Villupuram and further parks planned for Madurai and Tiruchirappalli. EY and CII reported on 30 September 2026 that Coimbatore hosted more than 75 global capability centres in 2026 and could reach nearly 200 by 2032, and credited the state's payroll linked GCC incentive framework.
