About Hong Kong FinTech Week 2017

Hong Kong FinTech Week is one of Asia's major annual fintech events, bringing together financial institutions, technology companies, investors and regulators.

For the 2017 edition, Lemniscate Growth marketed the event with a focus on senior decision-makers rather than general attendance.

The problem

Senior executives do not respond to ads

CXOs delegate their inboxes and ignore generic promotion. The audience that makes an event valuable is the hardest one to reach through paid media.

Many partners, each with their own network

Associations, sponsors and ecosystem partners each hold relationships with the right people. Without coordination, those networks either go unused or send mixed messages.

What we did

01Map every partner channel

We identified every partner organisation connected to the event and what each could reach.

  • Associations, sponsors and ecosystem partners
  • The senior audience each partner could invite

02Reach out through all of them

Each partner received a clear, specific ask and material to invite its own senior network.

  • Partner-specific invitations
  • Consistent messaging across channels

03Build the pipeline and close it

Interest from partner channels was followed up and tracked through to confirmed attendance, the same way a sales pipeline is worked.

  • Stage-by-stage tracking of prospective attendees
  • Follow-up to confirmation

Lessons

What you can take from this. Even if you never hire us.

01

Partner lists reach people ads cannot

For a senior audience, an invitation from an association or partner they already trust outperforms any paid campaign. Give partners a specific ask and make it easy for them to act.

02

Run event attendance like a sales pipeline

Track prospective attendees by stage and follow up until they confirm. Registrations that are not worked do not turn into a full room.

03

The same skill books meetings for exhibitors

Reaching executives before an event is the same work that fills a client's calendar with pre-booked meetings at conferences today.

How do you get senior executives to attend a fintech conference?

Use partner channels rather than paid ads. Associations, sponsors and ecosystem partners already have trusted relationships with executives. For Hong Kong FinTech Week 2017, Lemniscate Growth reached out through every partner channel, then built and closed the attendee pipeline, bringing about 4,000 CXOs to the event.

What is partner channel marketing for events?

It means asking the organisations connected to an event, such as associations, sponsors and ecosystem partners, to invite their own networks, with clear messaging and follow-up. Lemniscate Growth used this approach for Hong Kong FinTech Week 2017, treating partner interest as a pipeline and closing it, for about 4,000 CXOs.

How can B2B companies use fintech events for pipeline?

Book meetings before the event instead of relying on booth traffic. The outreach skills Lemniscate Growth used to bring about 4,000 CXOs to Hong Kong FinTech Week 2017 now fill clients' calendars at events such as Hong Kong FinTech Week, GITEX Dubai and Consensus, where CipherBC saw at least a 15x return.

How did Hong Kong FinTech Week 2017 coordinate its partner organizations?

For Hong Kong FinTech Week 2017, we started by mapping every partner organization connected to the event, including associations, sponsors and ecosystem partners, and the senior audience each could invite. Each partner then received a clear, specific ask and material for inviting its own network, with consistent messaging across all channels. Coordination mattered because uncoordinated partner networks either go unused or send mixed messages. About 4,000 CXOs took part.

Why was Hong Kong FinTech Week 2017 attendance managed like a sales pipeline?

Attendance at Hong Kong FinTech Week 2017 was run like a sales pipeline because registrations that nobody works do not fill a room. Interest arriving from partner channels was tracked stage by stage, and prospective attendees and their teams received follow-up until they confirmed. Lemniscate Growth marketed one of Asia's major annual fintech events this way, building and closing the pipeline of senior attendees, and about 4,000 CXOs took part.

What made CXOs hard to reach for Hong Kong FinTech Week 2017?

Senior executives were hard to reach for Hong Kong FinTech Week 2017 because they delegate their inboxes and ignore generic promotion, so paid media rarely gets through. The audience that makes a fintech event valuable is the hardest one to reach with ads. The route in was the event's partners, whose associations and sponsor networks already held trusted relationships with those executives. With every partner channel activated, about 4,000 CXOs took part.

Can the Hong Kong FinTech Week 2017 approach work for my event?

It suits events with conditions similar to Hong Kong FinTech Week 2017: a senior audience that ignores ads, several partner organizations with their own trusted networks, and a team able to follow up with each prospective attendee until they confirm. That edition, one of Asia's major annual fintech events, used every partner channel and reached about 4,000 CXOs. If your event has few partners, or registrations cannot be worked as a pipeline, the model is harder to repeat.
